Mets Sign Jared West

The Mets have signed Jared West as a college free agent from Stephen F. Austin University and assigned him to the GCL Mets. In 2011, West had a 7-3 record and a 3.08 ERA. In 79 innings, the righty struck out 58 batters and walked just 38. Opponents hit .272 against him. That’s much better than his 201o stats. Then, he finished the season with a 7.13 ERA, yielding 72 hits in 53 innings. Opponents hit .340 against him. That season he had control problems: he walked 37 while striking out 26.

His twin brother, Jason, pitched for the same team and was not drafted either in 2011. Both brothers received honorable mentions for the 2011 All-Southland Conference Baseball Teams.

Now, Jason West is pitching for the Willmar Stingers of the Northwoods League, a summer league. In 10 innings of work over nine games, he has a 1.80 ERA and 15 strikeouts.

Time for Mets to Consider a Change

The current team will never win a championship. The Mets need to seriously consider trading by the trading deadline Jason Bay, Franscisco Rodriguez, and Mike Pelfrey. In addition, I’m suspicious of Jose Reyes’ performance this year. It’s not unusual for a player whose contract is expiring to escalate his performance in his final season. He has additional incentive for doing so: money. After some team gives him a large, multiyear contract, will his performance upswing continue? Finally, David Wright isn’t the same player he once was. Whether it’s because of CitiField or some other factor, he’s at best, an above-average player. If I were the Mets GM I’d like to know what other teams are willing to offer to get those players.

Josh Edgin Starring at Savannah

Josh Edgin, a left-handed relief pitcher for Savannah, has been one of the Mets best minor league pitchers this season. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last 16 appearances, and now has 14 saves. His ERA is 0.96. Opposing batter are hitting .135 against him. This season’s performance isn’t a fluke. Last season, with Kingsport he had a 2.84 ERA.

In 2010 the Met drafted Edgin in the 30th round out of Francis Marion University. In the 2009 draft, Atlanta selected him in the 50th round. Fortunately for the Mets, Edgin didn’t sign with the Braves.

A Pennsylvania native, in his 2009 college season he won four, lost two, and had a 4.04 ERA. Eleven of his 16 appearances were starts. Opposing batters hit .234 against him. In his 2010 college season, his ERA was 4.07. He won six and lost four in 14 appearances: one was in relief. For some reason, batters did much better against him than in 2009, hitting .295.

In the 30th round of the 2011 draft, the Mets selected a high school left-handed pitcher, Jacob Hansen.

Mets Sign Another Draft Choice

According to John Gant’s high school coach, the pitcher has signed with the Mets. The Mets drafted Gant in the 21st round of the 2011 MLB draft. Gant is the second 2011 draft choice the Mets have signed.
