The phrase “draft steal” gets thrown around a lot after every MLB Draft. Usually, it’s impossible to know whether it fits until years later. But if you’re a Mets fan, Mitch Voit is already giving you a reason to pay attention.
The Mets made Voit their first selection in the 2025 MLB Draft, taking the former Michigan standout with the 38th overall pick. Since signing, he’s done what he did in college—get on base, create runs and make life miserable for opposing pitchers once he reaches base.
It Started at Michigan
Voit’s final season at Michigan turned heads.
After transitioning from being a two-way player to focusing solely on hitting and playing second base, he put together one of the better offensive seasons in the Big Ten. He hit .346 with a .471 on-base percentage, a .668 slugging percentage, 14 home runs, and led the Wolverines in eight offensive categories.
Those numbers helped make him the Mets’ first pick in the draft.
He’s Carrying It Into Pro Ball
What has stood out most about Voit’s first full professional season isn’t just one tool. It’s the combination.
He gets on base.
He runs.
He puts pressure on defenses.
His latest game for the Brooklyn Cyclones was a perfect example.
Voit reached base four times, stole three bases—swiping second twice and third once—and helped Brooklyn earn another victory. The performance raised his season total to 34 stolen bases, which ranked third in the South Atlantic League at the time.
Why Fans Are Talking
No one can say today whether Voit will become the biggest bargain of the 2025 draft. That answer won’t come for several years. But it’s easy to understand why people are beginning to ask the question.
The Mets drafted a player coming off an outstanding college season. He’s carried that production into professional baseball.
And every week he seems to find another way to impact a game. Some nights it’s with his bat. Other nights it’s with his legs. Sometimes it’s both.
A Player Worth Following
One game doesn’t define a career. Neither does one season. But prospects earn attention by producing, and that’s exactly what Voit has done.
The numbers speak for themselves:
- 38th overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft.
- .346/.471/.668 with 14 home runs during his final season at Michigan.
- Reached base four times and stole three bases in his latest standout performance.
- 34 stolen bases, third-most in the South Atlantic League.
Whether those accomplishments eventually lead to a long major league career remains to be seen.
For now, though, Mitch Voit is doing what fans hope to see from a high draft pick.
He’s getting on base.
He’s creating runs.
He’s stealing bases.
And if he keeps doing those things as he climbs the Mets’ farm system, the conversation about whether New York found exceptional value with the 38th overall pick is only going to grow louder.
